No 599 - Anglo-Saxon gold tremissis

No 599 - Anglo-Saxon gold tremissis Image

Probably a Merovingian tremissis dating from 500 - 700 AD. It has a diameter of 10.92mm, thickness 1.40mm. The design seems too large for the flan, so possibly it was copied from a larger coin of c.20mm diameter. There is a border defined by solid lines on one face, containing curved line, straight lines and pellets. The central motif is an unintelligable group of curved lines and pellets. The other face is weakly struck and possibly bears a crude bust and blundered legend.
