660: Anglo-Saxon Penny of King Alfred the Great : This
beautiful little Saxon penny was issued by King Alfred the Great
who was the brother and successor to Aethelred. Alfred had to
contend with invading Danish armies for much of his reign
(871-899). In 878 he and Guthrum the Dane, divided the country,
with Alfred holding all England south and west of Watling Street.
Alfred occupied London in 886 AD.
This
coin shows Alfred’s bust facing right and reads ELFREDR.
The reverse has the Londonia monogram.
