No 641: Anglo-Saxon Sceat ‘Animal Mask’ Eclectic Group

No 641: Anglo-Saxon Sceat ‘Animal Mask’ Eclectic Group:

The sceat is one of the Animal Mask type (Metcalf p.446 - 8). "It`s a rare
type and there are five different reverse designs known, all with a similar
animal obverse. This one has the bird probably copied from Series Q, but it`s
the only example I`ve seen where the bird is walking left. Nothing is known
about origin of the type, but judging from the usual quality of the silver I
would guess that it`s not a late issue - probably around 710 - 715.”

It is a beautiful little coin.
